Our project has become a more difficult issue than we initially anticipated. We are hopeful that we can create interest into the life of bees and how critical they are to our society. We hope this blog will become something bigger and is a conduit for beekeepers, scientists, and concerned citizens to help figure out this problem of public safety from mosquitoes and preserving bees. Please feel free to respond, comment, or suggest solutions. Thank you for taking the time to visit!
OUR RESULTS:
1. Due to the fact that there is not a SAFE pesticide that does not harm bees, authorities, pesticide specialists, and scientists need to do aerial spraying at night if possible. This limits the harm to bees (who typically are not out at night) and targets mosquitoes more (who are out at night). By simply adjusting the timing of these pesticide sprays our experts and research leads us to believe we can minimize the risk to our bee population.
2. The best long term solution is to develop a pesticide that genetically attacks only mosquitoes and not bees. Since mosquitoes are a type of fly they are genetically different than a bee. This is how we should target a new generation of pesticides that attacks only mosquitoes.
